Disclosure
“I am in a senior grade and I think this would further reduce my chances of promotion. Disabilities are not for senior managers...”
“Did not disclose the condition - fear for an unnecessary scrutiny”
“I am always worried to mention it in interviews and now as it will jeopardise my position”
“Because I work in academia, I haven't wanted to reveal my problem in fear that it may make me seem incompetent.”
Who to ask
“I don't really know what to do about it in work, I am not sure what support is available.”
“I’ve repeatedly directed students to support available to them on campus like Disability Services, the Learning Center, and counselling services, but I’ve never stopped to think about what services might be available to me as an employee”
Access to Work
“I have had an Access to Work Assessment which recommended a number of reasonable adjustments including 6 sessions with a Dyslexia/Dyspraxia Coping Strategies coach and a Mental Health at Work coach through Remploy .”
“Struggling with Access to Work as they keep wanting to deal via telephone calls, which is difficult for me.”
“Very tight 4 week deadline to turn paper work around for Access to Work, not great for someone who is dyslexic, no reminders and no real follow up on the neurodiversity training recommended.”
“I have had some support from Access to Work, but it has been really patchy, and not always suitable for someone with ADHD.”
Reasonable Adjustments
“I have been provided with Dragon software which is useless as I have a speech impediment. My personnel file has my dyslexia report in it, other than my first manager no other managers have bothered to read it, since then I've had four managers.”
“To work in a 'safe space' in order to be able to concentrate at work and to use my headphones to remove any distractions I can have”
“Workload adjustments, breaks from work when feeling overwhelmed/agitated.”
“Darker office space, Less artificial light, Quiet Place to work”
Management Training
“The level of support depends on the manager. My new team are very patient with me, but I am not even sure that my current manger has read my OH report. No support has been discussed.”
“I do not feel my employer fully understands the problems I face”
“Specific training for managers would be helpful though - we have really just worked it out for ourselves.”
“My manager has been really supportive and read everything I have sent her as well as doing a bit of her own research.”
